First look | Aventon Current EXP arrives in Australia.

First look | Aventon Current EXP arrives in Australia. We've just taken delivery of the Aventon Current EXP, a new full-power e-MTB being brought into Australia by BikesOnline. Aaron Pelttari has it in his grubby little mitts and is getting it ready for testing. Before that begins, here's a look at the bike, what it weighs, who Aventon are and where the $8,599 price puts it against some other e-MTBs. Who is Aventon? Aventon was founded in California in 2013. It started out making fixed-gear bikes, launching with the hydroformed aluminium Mataró frame before forming a racing team and becoming fairly well known in the fixie scene. The brand began moving into e-bikes with the Pace 500 in 2018. It released its final fixed-gear model the following year and shifted its focus towards electric bikes. Since then, Aventon has grown quickly in North America. Most of its bikes have been aimed at commuting and everyday riding, including cargo, folding and fat-tyre bikes. It has also put a lot of work into its own motors, electronics and connected features. The Ramblas arrived in 2024 as Aventon's first e-MTB. That was a hardtail using the brand's A100 mid-drive motor. The Current marks its move into full-suspension mountain bikes, and it's already made waves. Aventon is well established in the US e-bike market, but it will be a new name for most Australian mountain bikers. Who are BikesOnline? BikesOnline is an Australian-owned online bike retailer based in Sydney. It is best known here for selling Polygon and Marin, although its range now includes loads of well curated parts from plenty of other brands. The business works as both distributor and retailer. Instead of bikes passing through a separate importer, distributor and bike shop, BikesOnline buys directly and sells through its website. That model has allowed it to offer some fairly sharp pricing over the years, particularly with Polygon. The trade-off is that you're buying online rather than through a conventional local bike shop. BikesOnline has now been appointed Aventon's exclusive Australian distributor. It will handle local distribution, customer service and after-sales support. The Current doesn't use a Bosch, Shimano or Yamaha motor, so support for the drive system and electronics will come through BikesOnline. What is the Aventon Current EXP? The Current is available in ADV and EXP versions. The bike we have is the higher-spec Current EXP. It uses a carbon front triangle with an alloy rear end, 29in wheels, 140mm of rear travel and a 150mm RockShox Lyrik Select fork. The rest of the build includes a RockShox Super Deluxe Select+ shock, SRAM S1000 Eagle AXS Transmission drivetrain, SRAM Maven brakes and Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR II tyres. Our bike is a size Large with a colour-shifting silver, blue and green finish. Our bike weighed 24.2kg straight out of the box without pedals. That was with tubes fitted. Building the Aventon Current EXP. The Current EXP arrives mostly assembled. Building it involves fitting the handlebar, front wheel and pedals. A hex key multi-tool is included, so there's enough in the box to put the bike together without owning a workshop full of tools. Alloy platform pedals are also supplied. The tyres arrive with tubes fitted, although tubeless valves are included. You also get the charger, an analogue shock pump, fork volume tokens, and manuals, etc. The bike is easy to assemble and the first look over the frame and components has been positive. For a direct-to-consumer e-MTB, it appears well built and neatly finished. Very important! Aaron has built plenty of high-end bikes over the years and reckons the overall construction compares well. Things such as the angled bottle cage bracket, chainstay mudguard and general frame finish have been properly thought through. The paint also looks good, particularly given where the bike sits on price. None of this tells us how it will ride or hold up over time, but it doesn't feel like a rough or unfinished product out of the box. What do we know about the Ultro X motor? The Current uses Aventon's own Ultro X drive system. The motor weighs around 2.8kg and produces a claimed 110Nm of torque with 750W of peak power. A 30-second Boost mode increases that to 120Nm and 850W, with up to 500% support. It is paired with a removable 800Wh battery. The assistance modes are Auto, Eco, Trail, Turbo and Boost, with further adjustment available through Aventon's Ride Tune app. There's a touchscreen display built into the top tube. It carries a lot more information than most e-MTB displays and allows you to change settings directly on the bike. The system also includes GPS and 4G connectivity, over-the-air updates, security functions, wheel-lift control and jump tracking. Aaron has only ridden the bike around the carpark so far. The motor feels decent from that very brief spin and the display is clear, but that's about all we can say at this point. How the motor delivers its power, how it feels, how noisy it is, how much range it gets from the battery and how it behaves on technical climbs will take a proper test. How does the $8,599 price stack up? The Aventon Current EXP is listed at $8,599 AUD. The parts and finish look good for the money, although there are now quite a few full-power e-MTBs competing around this price, let's take a look around. The Giant Stance E+1 costs $7,499. It has the same 29in wheels, 150/140mm travel and 800Wh battery capacity as the Aventon. Its SyncDrive Pro 3X motor produces 100Nm and 800W of peak power. The Giant uses a full alloy frame, Giant Crest suspension and a Shimano CUES drivetrain. It weighed 25.46kg without pedals and with tubes installed. The Aventon costs $1,100 more, but gives you a carbon front triangle, RockShox suspension, AXS Transmission and a 1.26kg weight saving. The Norco Sight VLT Bosch A range starts at $6,799 and tops out at $8,699 for the A1 model we tested. The Norco uses an alloy frame, Bosch PX motor and a smaller 600Wh battery, with the A1 weighing 23.8kg. It also comes with regular bike-shop support. Then there are the two new Amflows. The Amflow PR Carbon starts at $6,999, while the PR Carbon Pro we currently have on test costs $8,699. The PR Carbon Pro has a full carbon frame, 160/150mm travel, a removable 800Wh battery and the same SRAM S1000 AXS Transmission found on the Aventon. Its Avinox M2S motor claims 150Nm and up to 1,500W in Boost mode. It also gets a Fox 36 Performance fork, Float X shock and Magura Gustav Pro brakes. The Amflow PX Carbon range starts at $9,999. It uses the same Avinox M2S motor but pairs it with a lighter, fixed 700Wh battery. Our PX Carbon Pro test bike costs $13,999, so it is playing at a different level to the Aventon, but the base model is still only $1,400 more. That puts the Current EXP into a pretty competitive and growing part of the market. The build and price are competitive, but the Ultro X motor and the way the bike rides will need to hold up against some strong alternatives. We'll know more once Aaron has ridden the heck out of it, soooo stay tuned! So far so good, we're stoked to have a new bike on test! Aventon welcomes Jen Whalen as creative director.

Aventon welcomes Jen Whalen as creative director. May 19, 2026 Aventon, a maker of ebikes, announced the appointment of Jen Whalen as creative director. A former procyclist and creative producer, director, and filmmaker with over 15 years of experience across Hollywood studios and global brand campaigns, Whalen brings "high-production storytelling expertise and authentic cycling background to her new role," said Aventon in a media release. Whalen joins Aventon from a freelance career, where she partnered with brands including Apple, Netflix, Levi's, Specialized, SRAM, and Hulu across creative direction, production, and storytelling. Before that, she spent nearly a decade as a senior producer for the in-house creative studio at Warner Bros., producing trailers, promos and digital campaigns for global releases, earning Promax and Telly Awards. Her connection to cycling runs deep. Whalen came up through the fixed gear scene and rode for Aventon's original pro team during the Red Hook Crit era. She went on to become a competitive road cyclist, winning a California State Championship title and competing at U.S. Nationals. In recent years, she has built a second creative lane in the outdoor industry, producing athlete-driven and docu-style storytelling, including a series around the inaugural women's Tour de France Femmes. In her role at Aventon, Whalen will lead creative direction and brand storytelling across campaigns, product launches, social content, and athlete partnerships, driving culture-led work that grows Aventon's brand reach and community connection. "Jen is a rare find: someone who has genuinely lived inside cycling culture at every level, from the fixed gear underground to the pro circuit, and who also knows how to tell stories that move people," said Kris Heineman, Senior Brand Director at Aventon. "She brings a creative point of view that is bold, authentic, and deeply human, which is exactly what we need as we continue to grow the brand." "Aventon has always been a fun success story to follow, from its fixie roots to where it stands today in the ebike world," said Whalen. "I want to get more people on bikes and out of their cars. It excites me to bring my ideas and creativity to this team, since I have a natural passion for cycling and it feels serendipitous to bring my energy back to a brand that supported me during my "glory" days of bike racing. Apparently, the race isn't over yet." Whalen is based in Los Angeles and joined Aventon in early May 2026. Images courtesy Aventon
