Requirements
  • The caregiver must qualify through one of the listed Hawaii Early Childhood Registry pathways: a degree in child development or early childhood education plus six months of early-childhood-program work experience; a post-secondary child development associate credential or organized two-year, 60-credit college program and an early childhood education certificate plus one year of supervised teaching experience; a bachelor's degree in elementary education plus six months of early-childhood-program work experience and six approved child-development or early-childhood training credits; or a bachelor's degree in any field plus six months of early-childhood-program work experience and twelve approved child-development or early-childhood training credits.
  • The caregiver must be registered through the Hawaii Department of Human Services Early Childhood Registry according to state child-care licensing rules.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting is required.
  • The caregiver must be able to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • The caregiver must have experience with diverse populations and be able to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • The caregiver must commit to inclusion and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The caregiver must complete state-specific hiring standards and YMCA program-specific training.
  • Daily access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training must be completed before the first shift.
  • All candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex-offender checks.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead age- and developmentally appropriate early-learning experiences in a classroom setting, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for children ages two to under six.
  • Supervise the children, classroom, and all program activities.
  • Follow procedures and standards established by law or the YMCA, make Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations where appropriate, and maintain the program site, equipment, and required program records.
  • Nurture children through purposeful programming and create lesson plans intended to achieve program goals and outcomes.
  • Create positive rapport and shared interest with all youth.
  • Provide opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and choices within the program, and provide daily opportunities for youth to reflect on and respond to their experiences.
  • Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers about each child's needs and progress, conduct parent and caregiver conferences, and connect families to the YMCA.
  • Prepare snacks and meals.
  • Collaborate with aides and other teachers on lesson planning and activities.
  • Lead circle-time and large-group activities as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation, First Aid, and automated external defibrillator certifications are preferred; training is provided.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification is preferred.
