Moniepoint restructures engineering teams as roles face redundancy. Moniepoint is reorganising its engineering and product teams as the Nigerian fintech tries to put smaller groups in charge of building and running individual products. The company says the change will make some existing roles redundant while creating others, including platform architect positions. It has not disclosed how many people will ultimately leave. In a statement shared with Techpoint Africa, Moniepoint described the move as a regular strategic review. Its new platform groups will own product areas from development through deployment and operation, a shift intended to reduce handoffs and make responsibility for service reliability clearer. That is the company's rationale; the impact on workers and delivery will become clearer as the transition proceeds. The central employment question is not just whether the organisation chart gets flatter. Moniepoint says fewer positions will be needed in some areas and new roles will be added in others. Staff whose posts become redundant will be considered for other vacancies where possible. If the company cannot find a suitable role, it says a redundancy consultation will begin. The distinction matters because an offer to leave, a role becoming redundant and a completed job loss are three different things. Without a confirmed headcount, it would be misleading to attach a number to the outcome or claim all affected workers have already departed. The company has not publicly connected the reorganisation to AI replacing particular staff, and such a link should not be assumed. Moniepoint has moved well beyond the payment terminals that made it a household name among Nigerian merchants. Its businesses now span payments, banking, credit and business software, with expansion beyond Nigeria adding further demands on engineering. A large organisation can accumulate layers of approval between product managers, developers and operations teams. Smaller groups with end-to-end ownership may be able to respond to problems more quickly, provided the shared systems beneath them remain dependable. That last condition is important for a financial platform. A team might ship a feature faster, but a payment failure, security weakness or poorly coordinated infrastructure change can have direct consequences for customers. The new platform architect positions suggest Moniepoint understands the need for common technical standards even as it decentralises day-to-day product decisions. TechBooky has tracked how Moniepoint is expanding its merchant software through the Orda acquisition. That broader product range helps explain why the company wants to revisit how teams are organised. It does not, by itself, establish whether the current workforce changes will improve service or reduce costs. For employees, the near-term questions are whether roles are genuinely available elsewhere in the group, how selection decisions are made and what support follows if no match is found. For customers, the test will be less visible but just as concrete: whether the new teams make Moniepoint's services more reliable as the company grows. Until the process is complete, the confirmed story is a restructuring with potential redundancies, not a verified final tally of job cuts. Related reading. The Director-General of NBTI, Dr Kazeem Raji, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a news conference on the outcomes of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026, which showcased 298 Nigerian innovators from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Raji said the proposed investment pipeline comprises two international arrangements: a solar-energy partnership with Gigawatt Global to support Nigerian tertiary institutions and a financing MoU with Cambridge Investors. * "The first component involves a proposed 500 million dollar solar-energy partnership with Gigawatt Global for Nigerian tertiary institutions," he said. * "The second component features a 100 million dollar financing Memorandum of Understanding signed with Cambridge Investors," he added. According to Raji, the $100 million financing MoU is intended to support President Bola Tinubu's Light Initiative, which targets one million micro and small businesses nationwide. NBTI highlights support for women innovators. Raji said international support for the innovation ecosystem also includes grants for women innovators, foreign acceleration programmes and leadership scholarships. * "Our message is straightforward: Nigeria's innovators deserve visibility, our enterprises deserve opportunities to grow and our technologies deserve pathways to the marketplace," he said. * "We are presenting a national innovation story, a portfolio of emerging investment, and a practical pathway towards economic prosperity," Raji added. He said NBTI's responsibility was to help translate the opportunities and frameworks into bankable projects with transparent implementation and verifiable results. * "Our responsibility is to help move these opportunities from announcements and frameworks towards bankable projects, transparent implementation, and verifiable results," he said. The NBTI director-general urged private-sector investors and development partners to deepen their engagement with Nigeria's innovation ecosystem. Efforts to strengthen Nigeria's innovation ecosystem. The proposed investment pipeline comes amid broader government and private-sector efforts to strengthen Nigeria's innovation ecosystem, expand access to financing and develop technology talent. * In August 2026, the Federal Government, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), announced plans to develop a National Innovation Hub Standards Framework to establish common standards for Nigeria's 339 identified innovation hubs and strengthen their capacity to support startups and technology-driven businesses. * Earlier, in May 2026, Moniepoint announced a N3 billion investment to establish innovation hubs at Obafemi Awolowo University, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Ahmadu Bello University over three years, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's technology talent pipeline. In July 2026, the Bank of Industry signed a $170.06 million fund-management agreement with Kuramo Capital Management under the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) Programme to channel financing to startups and high-growth businesses in Nigeria's technology and creative sectors.
