About the company

USAA sells insurance, banking and investment products to U.S. military members, veterans and their families, and membership is limited to that community and eligible relatives. It began when Army officers who struggled to get car coverage agreed to insure each other, and auto and home insurance remain its core business. Members can also open checking and savings accounts, carry credit cards, take out auto loans and mortgages, and buy life insurance, annuities and retirement accounts. The company earns money from insurance premiums, loan interest, card fees and investment management. USAA was founded in 1922 and is based in San Antonio, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Capital keeps building: net worth rose $6.3 billion to $38.6 billion in 2025, reported May 2026.
  • Pay extends beyond salary: USAA matches 401(k) savings up to 8% and funds tuition-free study for staff and dependents.
  • Members got a record payout: USAA returned $3.8 billion for 2025, its April 2026 annual report showed.

What critics are saying

  • Bank staff inherit a long cleanup: an OCC order still in force folds in unfixed 2019 and 2022 compliance orders.
  • Claims handling draws lawsuits: USAA agreed to a $647,000 settlement over alleged Michigan total-loss underpayments, reported August 2026.
  • Disasters squeeze results: USAA's April 2026 report showed nearly $1.7 billion paid in 2025 California wildfire claims.

What makes USAA unique

  • Customers own the insurer: USAA runs as a reciprocal exchange, so surplus returns to members, unlike shareholder-owned GEICO.
  • USAA steps in when military pay stops: nearly $450 million in relief reached 127,000 members through November 2025.
  • Its mission reaches veteran careers: Honor Through Action, launched November 2025, commits $500 million over five years.

Washington fines USAA, Allstate $230,000 as New claims rules take effect.

Washington fines USAA, Allstate $230,000 as New claims rules take effect. New insurance claims rules in Washington state require insurers to explain disputed repair costs and respond more quickly to auto glass repair shops. The changes took effect October 18, less than three weeks after Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer announced $230,000 in fines against USAA and Allstate for insurance violations. USAA Casualty Insurance Co. was fined $140,000 for unfair or deceptive practices involving auto claims. Allstate Vehicle and Property Insurance Co. was fined $90,000 for claims-handling violations and for failing to comply with the state's premium change transparency rule. "We take our role as a consumer protection agency seriously," Kuderer says. "These orders, and the actions we've taken against insurers for failing to meet their obligations to policyholders when processing their claims, are a testament to that work." What the New Rules Mean for Auto Glass Shops Neither case involved auto glass-specific violations. Allstate's violations concerned homeowners insurance claims, while USAA's involved auto claims, primarily collision accidents, according to the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner. Under the updated rules, insurers have five business days to notify customers and their repair shops in writing of what they'll cover when they receive supplemental damage estimates or final invoices. If they reject additional damage, they must explain why. For auto glass shops, that could mean getting a clearer answer when additional damage is discovered during a windshield replacement or when an insurer questions a calibration charge. When Insurers Dispute Repair Costs Insurers must explain why they pay less than a repair facility's estimate. The updated rules require them to identify costs they won't cover and to explain the policy provisions that support their decisions. Customers can request a written explanation of how the insurer determined labor costs, material costs and repair procedures. That could help explain differences between an insurer's estimate and the shop's charges. Insurers must also consider additional damage discovered during repairs. Their estimates must be prepared by someone qualified to evaluate the work, and insurers are responsible for the accuracy of their repair documentation. More Options for Shops and Customers Insurers can't require shops to use only an online application to submit claims information. Shops must have the option of submitting documents by email, regular mail, fax or in person. Customers who disagree with an estimate based on photographs or a virtual inspection can request an in-person inspection. Insurers must generally complete it within five business days unless another time is agreed upon. The insurance commissioner's office says the changes should also help repair shops by improving communication and increasing transparency in how insurers determine repair costs. Auto glass professionals who believe an insurer isn't following Washington's claims handling standards can file a complaint with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner. The rules don't require insurers to approve every repair or pay every amount a shop requests. But they do establish deadlines for responding to additional repair costs and require clearer explanations when insurers disagree with repair estimates.

USAA adds to in-person services at Colorado Springs financial center.

USAA adds to in-person services at Colorado Springs financial center. Published October 10, 2026 2:56pm | Updated October 12, 2026 12:07pm A banking and insurance service built for veterans and their families is expanding its customer service footprint in Colorado Springs. USAA has four financial centers and one is in Colorado Springs. Rather than serving as a banking-only institution, the financial center at 1855 Telstar Drive on the city's far north side is helping roll out what the company calls One USAA. In-person help with insurance will now be available along with banking services. The company said the change will make it easier for new members - like those at the nearby Air Force Academy - to join as they're starting their military careers. Colorado Springs is the first USAA location near a service academy to get the enhanced service, the company said in a recent news release. "I know from my brother when he showed up on day one, you're getting ready to go to basic training and you're starting to get paid and you need bank accounts, you need insurance to insure your goods that will be in your dorm room," said Patrick Barry, assistant vice president of the company's financial centers. "Things you're probably not thinking about as an 18-year-old or a 17-year-old." The One USAA strategy came about after the company consistently heard members say they'd prefer to discuss certain topics - like insurance - in person rather than over the phone, Barry said. Colorado Springs is home to an estimated 90,000 veterans. Fort Carson, the Air Force Academy, Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station account for a military population of about 111,000 active service members, according to the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC. USAA, which also offers investment services through a partnership with Charles Schwab & Co., according to its website, operates three other financial centers: Annapolis, Md., near the Naval Academy; Highland Falls, N.Y., near the Military Academy at West Point; and at its corporate headquarters in San Antonio. USAA has 14.3 million members, according to its 2025 annual report.
