Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • At least 3 years of diverse geotechnical engineering experience is required.
  • Experience with building and bridge foundations, pavement design, slope stability or stabilization, and ground improvement or modification design and construction is required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering examination is required.
  • Field experience must include boring and test-pit inspection for highway, bridge, and building projects; Burmister and Unified soil classification systems; permeability test inspection; pavement core inspection; and general contractor supervision.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical design software including gINT or OpenGround, Ensoft LPILE or GROUP, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, SLIDE2, GRLWEAP, and ct-Shoring, or similar software, is required.
  • A clean driving record is required, and driving is a requirement of the position.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide field oversight of subsurface investigation programs, including soil borings, field classification of soils and rock, in-situ testing, geologic mapping, and geophysical testing.
  • Interpret laboratory test results to determine design parameters.
  • Develop and provide oversight of geotechnical instrumentation programs and data collection, including conventional piezometers, inclinometers, extensometers, and tiltmeters.
  • Evaluate, select, and determine appropriate foundation solutions for complex sites.
  • Perform geotechnical and foundation-related design calculations for transportation projects, including slope stability, settlement, deep and shallow foundations, retaining walls, and support of excavation systems.
  • Prepare Subsurface Exploration and Soils Laboratory Testing Program submissions, Foundation Design Recommendations, and other geotechnical-related reports.
  • Review contractor design and construction submittals.
  • Conduct on-site observations of construction activities, including pile driving, subgrade preparation, and installation of monitoring instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with junior- and senior-level staff to accomplish project goals.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred or may be in progress.
  • Three to five years of diverse geotechnical experience, including transportation project experience, is ideal; experience with NJDOT, the New Jersey Turnpike, or county agencies is preferred.
  • Rail and alternative project delivery experience is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer licensure is preferred.
  • Prior experience with AASHTO, FHWA, NJDOT, or New Jersey Turnpike Authority design manuals and guidelines is preferred.

Bonacci brings nearly 35 years' experience to the construction services department. 08.14.2026 Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, has announced that Jeffery (Jeff) Bonacci has joined the firm as a senior associate and constructions services department manager. In this role, Bonacci will be responsible for leading and developing the firm's construction management and construction inspection (CM/CI) program in Pennsylvania, serving clients statewide. Bonacci brings nearly 35 years of civil engineering experience and construction management, leading transportation infrastructure projects in northeastern Pennsylvania. He has overseen complex highway, bridge, and interstate reconstruction projects for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and public agencies, including multimillion-dollar projects for interstate reconstruction, bridge rehabilitation, roadway improvements, and design-build initiatives with project values exceeding $100 million. He is based in the firm's Bloomfield, New Jersey, office. Owen brings over 20 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and previously served as chief civil works engineer for a national consulting firm. In this role, he led the growth of the firm's civil works practice, supporting federal clients on projects spanning dam and levee safety, flood risk management, and risk-informed engineering. Prior to this role, Owen spent 13 years as the geotechnical branch chief for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District, where he led a team of 55 geotechnical and civil engineers, geologists, and drill crew for civil works and military programs.
