Requirements
  • A specialized diploma graduate of a recognized School of Radiology Sciences or a current validated American Registry of Radiologic Technologists registry in Radiologic Technology (R).
  • Knowledge of mammographic imaging techniques and procedures, including producing images of internal body structures for diagnosis and early detection of breast diseases.
  • Knowledge of preparing patients for diagnostic or radiological imaging and monitoring patient reactions during and after procedures, including responding to emergent situations with appropriate measures.
  • At least 40 hours of documented mammography training for technologists initially qualifying on or after April 28, 1999.
  • Documented training in digital mammography.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds and perform role-specific physical activities including kneeling, bending, squatting, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Responsibilities
  • Perform mammography examinations, screenings, and diagnostic studies, and assist during invasive procedures.
  • Detect breast tissue abnormalities through mammography procedures under physician direction and present findings to the physician for diagnosis.
  • Deliver patient care and education before, during, and after diagnostic imaging procedures.
  • Operate mammography equipment and perform mammography-related examinations to produce radiographic images for clinical screening and diagnostic purposes.
  • Position patients and breasts appropriately, instruct patients throughout procedures, and adjust compression mechanisms and equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Provide staff and patient protection according to prescribed radiation safety standards.
  • Document patient mammography services by completing patient record charting.
  • Obtain complete and accurate patient histories and deliver care and support services before, during, and after mammography procedures, including explaining procedures and answering inquiries.
  • Maintain mammography equipment by completing preventive maintenance, following use instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, and maintaining equipment inventories.
  • Perform related technologist duties as directed by the lead technologist, supervisor, or manager, including quality assurance and quality control activities.
  • Maintain continuing education required for licenses and the position.
  • Provide per diem coverage for Saturday hours, vacations, and call-outs across the Northeast hospitals, including Torresdale, Frankford, and Bucks campuses.
