Roblox provides a global virtual platform where people, especially under 18, can learn, work, play, and socialize by joining games and experiences created by a large community of developers. Using Roblox Studio, creators build immersive multiplayer experiences that run on the platform for others to explore and enjoy. The platform supports cross‑device access and social features, allowing players to interact, team up, and share content. Revenue comes from in‑platform purchases (such as virtual currency and items) and subscriptions, fueling a large ecosystem for both players and creators. What sets Roblox apart is its emphasis on user‑generated content and a scalable marketplace where millions of new games and experiences are continuously added by the community, rather than a single author-driven catalog. The company aims to connect people through shared, accessible digital experiences and to empower developers to build, monetize, and grow their communities on the platform.

Roblox bookings down 18% after deliberate algorithm change prioritises retention over revenue

Roblox expects third-quarter bookings of $1.576 billion to $1.653 billion, down 14% to 18% year-over-year. The company withdrew its full-year outlook and will now provide quarterly guidance only. Shares fell about 27% Friday to a fresh 52-week low near $34. Management says the decline stems partly from a deliberate algorithm change. In April, Roblox updated its discovery algorithm to optimise for long-term player retention using 28 days of behaviour data instead of seven. The change prioritises highly retentive games over near-term monetisation. Despite the bookings miss, quarterly revenue rose 36% to $1.47 billion. Daily active users climbed 10% to 123 million, and free cash flow grew 66% to $294 million. The company holds $6.1 billion in cash and investments.

Roblox Q2 revenue up 36% to $1.5B but bookings miss on monetisation shift

Roblox reported second-quarter revenue growth of 36% to $1.5 billion, whilst bookings rose 8% to $1.6 billion, near the low end of guidance. Daily active users increased 10% to 123 million, and free cash flow jumped 66% to $294 million. Bookings were pressured by younger users shifting to lower-monetising games and discovery changes favouring long-term retention over near-term spending. Chief financial officer Naveen Chopra attributed the shortfall to users moving away from high-monetising viral games towards newer experiences with lower monetisation per hour. The company forecast third-quarter bookings to decline 14%–18% year over year to $1.58 billion–$1.65 billion, citing difficult comparisons and continued monetisation weakness. Management expects retention gains to eventually offset the monetisation decline but gave no specific timeline.

However, revenue of $1.56 billion missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.11%, though it represented an increase from $1.44 billion in the same quarter last year. Roblox shares have declined 38.1% since the beginning of the year, contrasting with the S&P 500's 6.9% gain. The company currently holds a Zacks Rank of #4 (Sell), indicating expected underperformance in the near future. For the coming quarter, analysts project a loss of $0.37 per share on revenues of $1.85 billion.

Roblox downgraded by BMO and Deutsche Bank as bookings miss, monetization pressures mount

Roblox was downgraded by BMO Capital Markets and Deutsche Bank following disappointing second-quarter results and outlook. BMO cut the stock to Market Perform from Outperform, slashing its price target to $45 from $100. The firm cited a shift in engagement from high-monetising viral games to lower-earning titles, resulting in a 2.5% bookings miss. Deutsche Bank downgraded Roblox to Hold from Buy, lowering its target to $38 from $56. Bookings of $1,557 million finished roughly 3% below consensus. The company guided to its first year-on-year decline and withdrew full-year outlook, largely due to an April algorithm change prioritising retention over monetisation. Both analysts still see long-term potential but expect near-term pressure to persist.
