Requirements
  • The candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The candidate must have a high school diploma or educational equivalent.
  • The candidate must hold or obtain and maintain a valid driver's license with no more than five points.
  • The candidate must meet the essential physical demands of frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling objects, assisting with lifts, pushing wheelchairs, and lifting or moving up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally and document services for billing and tracking purposes.
  • The candidate must be willing and able to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and assist with activities of daily living, including exposure to and handling of bodily fluids.
  • The candidate must have basic computer skills, including email, Workday, and related systems such as Digital Agency.
  • The candidate must obtain and maintain program-required certifications and training, including Non-Crisis Intervention, American Heart Association CPR/First Aid, New Jersey Medication Administration, and Positive Behavior Supports training, within 120 days of appointment.
  • The candidate must remain calm in stressful situations and work in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
  • The candidate must be able to work beyond scheduled hours or report as scheduled on holidays, during inclement weather, or during emergencies when needed to maintain program coverage.
  • The candidate must be able to develop and maintain professional relationships aligned with the organization's mission and vision.
Responsibilities
  • Assist individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities while upholding their personal rights and providing emotional support.
  • Support people in meeting personal goals, using person-first language, facilitating socialization, and connecting them with community activities.
  • Provide overall supervision, protection, and care, maintain program safety guidelines, facilitate fire-safety learning, and escalate signs of potential harm.
  • Provide health, wellness, and safety support, including supervision and crisis management in accordance with policies and regulations.
  • Implement individualized service and behavior support plans, including Behavior Support Plans, Individualized Service Plans, Staff Action Plans, and Life Plans.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment.
  • Use safe handling procedures and implement infection-control protocols.
  • Provide personal care and assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, toileting, laundry, and housekeeping.
  • Teach and develop habilitative and rehabilitative skills.
  • Support person-centered advocacy, communication, self-expression, dispute resolution, and ethical decision-making.
  • Supervise or prepare balanced meals and snacks in accordance with dietary restrictions, modified diets, and liquid-consistency guidelines.
  • Transport and escort individuals to recreational activities, medical appointments, home visits, volunteer sites, and employment sites.
  • Assist individuals with purchases and safeguard personal allowance and other funds.
  • Administer medication as prescribed and assist with medication inventory, cabinet checks, over-the-counter inventory, and reordering supplies.
  • Schedule medical appointments and ensure timely follow-up appointments and attendance.
  • Use petty cash and house funds appropriately and maintain receipts and related documentation.
  • Operate agency vehicles, transport individuals, and maintain vehicle logs and maintenance sheets.
  • Develop specialized clinical knowledge for supporting adults with challenging behaviors, autism spectrum disorders, and complex medical needs.
  • Implement behavior support plans, behavior guidelines, and protocols.
  • Collect, record, and summarize data on observable behavior and report behavioral or health changes to clinical and leadership teams.
  • Communicate with families, external providers, and other members of individuals' circles of support.
  • Provide feedback, communicate programmatic needs, and participate in team meetings.
  • Complete required training and certifications and apply the skills learned.
  • Review communication logs, enter progress notes and service information, and collect and enter data in electronic health and medication records.
  • Complete required paperwork and documentation, including notifications, incident reports, file updates, maintenance requests, and incident tracking.
  • Use foundational teaching skills such as Explain, Model, Observe and Evaluate, task analysis, essential skills, supports, modifications, and progressive teaching.
  • Use person-centered thinking to understand behavior as communication and prevent escalation.
  • Report facility maintenance, upkeep, and safety concerns.
  • Consult with program leadership, clinical staff, and direct support staff to provide coordinated care.
  • Use approved intervention techniques, including verbal, environmental, and physical interventions, to respond to challenging or self-injurious behavior.
  • Provide support or coverage across assigned settings and programs, including off-site locations such as hospitals, to maintain required staffing coverage.
  • Participate in treatment-plan development when requested.
  • Comply with Federal, State, Local, and other applicable regulatory requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

  • Work or life experience supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of intellectual and developmental disabilities, clinical syndromes, or intellectual and developmental disabilities with co-occurring behavioral or mental health needs.

Yai's Manhattan Star Academy (MSA) is a private, non-profit day school within the YAI Network that serves students aged 3 to 21 with developmental disabilities. It combines academics with therapies (occupational, physical, speech, counseling) in a Montessori-inspired, developmentally based curriculum, using small classes and sensory-friendly facilities with technology to track progress. The school includes a transition and vocational program to prepare students for life after graduation. Its differentiators are the integrated therapeutic model, a specialized environment for neuro-developmental needs, and a continuous education path from early years through post-secondary readiness.
