Head of Field Research Operations

Data ManagementUpdated on Oct 30
Full-timeAuckland, New Zealand

About the Job

Requirements

  • You have built a field team from a handful of people to many while maintaining quality across sites.
  • You have designed protocols and quality checks rather than only following them.
  • You care about whether measurements are accurate, including sampling, bias, and repeatability.
  • You have run a budget and capacity plan, making trade-offs among coverage, quality, cost, and speed clear to affected stakeholders.
  • You can work with engineers and scientists, understand modelling teams’ needs, and translate them into executable plans for field crews.
  • You are willing to spend regular time on farms across New Zealand and make several trips a year to Australia and the United States.
  • You have the credibility to build farmers’ trust by listening and engaging with them.
  • Machine learning or farming experience is not required; pastoral knowledge can be developed in the role.

Responsibilities

  • Translate the machine learning roadmap into a ground-truth measurement plan, determining which measurements, farming systems, and countries to prioritize, and revising the plan as evidence changes.
  • Design measurement protocols for each region, dataset quality checks, and processes for updating those standards.
  • Hire and lead Regional Data Operations Leads in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States; build the function’s training, career paths, and culture.
  • Plan staffing, equipment, farms, and partnerships so models are not waiting on data, and own the associated budget.
  • Set how the organization works with host farmers, universities, and research groups.
  • Determine with evidence whether ground-truth data is responsible when a model underperforms, and serve as the senior measurement voice within the company.
  • Spend a substantial share of time on farms in each region.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience leading a conservation program as it grew from a single site to a whole landscape.
  • Experience building sampling or measurement crews at a soil-carbon or climate-tech startup.
  • Experience running field deployment or field operations at an agtech or robotics company.
  • Experience running ground truth for a remote-sensing or satellite product.
  • Experience leading multi-site field trials for a research organization or agribusiness.
  • Experience running a clinical, environmental, or research field operation.

About the Company

Halter

Data-driven pasture management for dairy farms

Halter provides data-driven pasture management for dairy farms. It delivers daily updates on pasture covers, growth rates, and leaf emergence by combining satellite imagery, local weather, biophysical models, grazing data, and seasonal trends. Farmers use the information to decide where and when to graze, optimize fencing and shifting of livestock, and allocate pasture efficiently to boost animal performance. The platform also hosts a community where farmers share experiences and best practices. Halter’s subscription-based service gives farmers ongoing access to the data and tools they need to run their operation more productively and profitably. Goals include helping farmers maximize pasture use and animal productivity, improve resilience to environmental changes, and build a collaborative farming community.
