About the Job

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in electromechanical product design, architecture, and launch, typically 12+ years.
  • Deep domain knowledge in high-performance rotating machinery, including precision gear systems such as planetary, harmonic, or cycloidal gears; bearing selection; sealing technologies; thermal management; and sensor packaging such as encoders and torque sensors.
  • A proven track record of architecting and bringing tightly packaged electromechanical assemblies through production release in high-rigor environments such as automotive, aerospace, or medical devices.
  • Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD and PLM, with the ability to set department-wide standards for detailed documentation, GD&T, and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Ability to resolve organization-level design challenges and balance innovation with practical manufacturing constraints.
  • Extensive experience leading cross-functional efforts, building alignment across multiple technical teams, and communicating with engineers and leadership.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the mechanical architecture and technology roadmap for actuator products, overseeing technical execution from initial concept through high-volume manufacturing.
  • Establish organizational best practices for CAD completion and comprehensive drawing packages, setting standards for advanced GD&T and 1D/3D tolerance analysis to ensure high-quality builds across teams.
  • Partner with suppliers and manufacturing teams to optimize designs for assembly, cost, and long-term reliability.
  • Support and mentor staff and senior-level engineers, provide technical guidance, lead critical design reviews, and foster an inclusive, collaborative team environment.
  • Own and manage complex technical risk through advanced FMEAs, comprehensive validation planning, and detailed due diligence on critical moving assemblies, including gears, bearings, seals, and shafts.
  • Ensure actuator product designs meet performance, thermal, and reliability targets and transition into robust mass-production hardware.
  • Establish engineering standards and foster the professional growth of a team of senior design engineers through production release.
  • Travel internationally 5%-10% to support the global supplier and partner network for actuator products.

Desired Qualifications

  • CATIA experience is preferred.

About the Company

Boston Dynamics

Develops legged robots for industrial use

Boston Dynamics designs and sells advanced legged robots to improve safety and efficiency in industrial and research settings. Its products, such as Spot and Pick, use onboard AI to perceive the environment, balance and navigate complex terrain, and autonomously avoid obstacles, enabling tasks that are dangerous or physically demanding for people. Spot is a mobile, 65-pound robot that can traverse stairs, uneven surfaces, and rough terrain, while Pick focuses on manipulation for robotics workflows. The company differentiates itself through its focus on mobility, dexterity, and safety, maintaining US-made production, and offering controlled sales plus ongoing maintenance, training, and support to commercial, industrial, and academic clients rather than consumer buyers. The goal is to augment human workers by handling risky or monotonous tasks, increasing safety and productivity across industries.
