About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years in a formal product management role, or a combination of deep hands-on CRM/ESP experience (approximately 10 years) and at least 2 years in a product management role.
  • Hands-on expertise with an ESP/CRM platform such as HubSpot, Braze, Iterable, Customer.io, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, or a similar platform.
  • Email deliverability expertise, including diagnosing and fixing deliverability problems; understanding SPF, DKIM, DMARC, sender and domain reputation, domain and IP warm-up, bounce and complaint handling, Gmail and Yahoo bulk-sender rules, suppression, list hygiene, unsubscribe and preference management; and monitoring inbox health.
  • Working knowledge of privacy and consent regulations relevant to messaging, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and CAN-SPAM.
  • Direct experience owning communications governance, including consent and opt-in, preferences, suppression, deduplication, frequency capping, and sender/domain governance.
  • Ability to connect business goals, customer experience, technical constraints, and operational risk into clear product decisions.
  • Technical fluency to work with Engineering on integrations, data flows, APIs, and system dependencies, without needing to write production code.
  • Ability to develop hypotheses, analyze data hands-on using SQL, spreadsheets, BI tools, or AI-assisted analysis, find root causes, make evidence-based recommendations, define success metrics, and distinguish signal from noise.
  • End-to-end execution discipline across multiple parallel workstreams.
  • Ability to move work forward without perfect direction and bring others along.
  • Fluency with AI tools as part of everyday research, documentation, analysis, and work acceleration.
Responsibilities
  • Own the CRM/ESP platform and architecture, including segmentation, data model, platform limits, and standards for effective use.
  • Define governance for scalable, compliant messaging across brands, including consent, opt-in/opt-out, channel and topic preferences, deduplication, frequency capping, sender/domain governance, and approval paths.
  • Partner with Engineering on customer data, events, attributes, and integrations that power communications, ensuring data flows are reliable and validated.
  • Own messaging health and deliverability by defining metrics and monitoring for send volume, delivery, bounces, complaints, unsubscribes, audience changes, and event failures; investigate anomalies and protect sender reputation.
  • Analyze messaging and customer data to identify gaps, test hypotheses, and prioritize fixes.
  • Audit the current CRM/ESP and vendor landscape, support vendor evaluation, and help lead migration or consolidation efforts end to end.
  • Build the governance and platform foundation to extend from email to push, in-app messaging, SMS, and other direct-to-user channels.
  • Serve as the primary product partner across Brand, Marketing/Growth, Engineering, Sales, and Legal; flag risks, make evidence-based recommendations, and drive alignment.
  • Create and maintain documentation for platform flows, policies, integrations, event definitions, and operating processes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with multi-channel messaging beyond email, such as push, in-app messaging, or SMS.
  • Leadership experience with platform migration or vendor consolidation.

Outside Interactive posts first profit with $125M revenue, shifts from ads to subscriptions

Outside Interactive, formerly Outside Media, reported its first profit in 2024 after five years of transformation under CEO Robin Thurston. The company generated $125 million in revenue, up 23% year-over-year. Since Thurston raised $150 million in February 2021, Outside has fundamentally restructured its business model. Digital subscriptions and recurring services now account for 60% of revenue, whilst digital advertising has shrunk to 40%, reversing the 70% advertising dependence of 2021. The company has acquired numerous businesses beyond traditional publishing, including fitness apps like MapMyFitness, mapping services like Trailforks, booking platform Inntopia, and photography platform FinisherPix. Thurston emphasises Outside Interactive is no longer a media company, having reoriented around these digital services whilst maintaining legacy outdoor titles including Ski, Backpacker and Yoga Journal.
