Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Two years of previous hospital pharmacy technician experience are required.
  • One year of sterile compounding experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge of metric system conversions and calculation of ratios and proportions is required.
  • A passing score of 90% on the calculation exam, aseptic preparation exam, safe handling of hazardous drugs, and practicum is required.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is required upon hire.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPT) registration in Pennsylvania is required upon hire.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds, sit and stand frequently, and use a keyboard frequently is required.
  • Patient care providers may be required to perform role-specific activities, including kneeling, bending, squatting, and performing CPR.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation and filling of medications necessary for inpatient and outpatient services under direct pharmacist supervision.
  • Support department initiatives and daily workflow by ensuring the proper medication and tools are available for the clinical team and patients.
  • Prepare physician drug orders for review and dispensing by a registered pharmacist.
  • Replenish Pyxis machines, monitor and record refrigerator temperatures when filling, document corrective actions when needed, and inform the Pharmacy Manager of ongoing issues.
  • Count, compound, and repackage pharmaceuticals using established procedures.
  • Dispense and distribute medications to patient areas; reorder and restock pharmacy inventory, department and nursing unit inventory, and returns; evaluate stock for expired medications; and perform necessary monitoring and documentation.
  • Perform billing and crediting functions to ensure proper billing of medications dispensed to patients in accordance with hospital finance policies, and document waste appropriately.
  • Pick up physician orders from team centers regularly and as requested by the pharmacist.
  • Perform light housekeeping, including arranging bins and stock, removing items from bulk storage, dusting shelves, removing open boxes, and keeping work areas neat and clean.
  • Replenish specialty and code carts and document restocking on a sign-out sheet with the time, date, and items replaced.
  • Use aseptic techniques to prepare intravenous medications, record intravenous refrigeration daily, and transport intravenous medications to the nursing floor.
  • Maintain competencies related to the intravenous laboratory, Pyxis, McKesson Automation, and CAPS.
  • Complete assigned inspections every other month and maintain department and hospital competencies; examine items for expiration dates and proper storage conditions, including light, refrigeration, heat, and security.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
