The lender has also expanded its funding capability, with facilities of up to £10m now available to SMEs and mid-market businesses. eCapital provides invoice finance and asset-based lending (ABL) solutions, with the business reporting increased demand from companies seeking working capital to support investment and expansion or manage cash flow amid challenging economic conditions. Orillia losing major employer amid mounting safety concerns.

Orillia losing major employer amid mounting safety concerns. eCapital is reportedly pulling its Orillia operation and while the company has not disclosed its reasons for doing so, it has reported frequent theft, property damage and safety concerns at the West Street South location Sep 16, 2026 1:30 PM 1 / 3 A For Lease sign is posted outside 174 West St. S. in Orillia, which houses eCapital, reported to be leaving Orillia, and FLSmidth. eCapital is pulling its operation out of Orillia for reasons undisclosed by the company; however, it has reported repeated thefts, property damage, trespassing and staff safety concerns to the City of Orillia. The business financing company is located at 174 West St. S. in Orillia, in the former Dorr Oliver Long building at the corner of Queen Street. Behind it is The Lighthouse shelter at 75 Queen St. E. and across the road is Ethen's Place, the primary rapid rehousing facility for youth, at 175 West St. S. "We have lost a major company totalling $15 to $20 million in annual salaries from our local economy," reported Michael Ladouceur, Orillia's director of business development, tourism and modernization, at Monday's council meeting, without naming it. "So there's a pressing issue at hand for council to figure out." Ladouceur and Ryan Lay, manager of economic development, presented a report to council seeking support to take immediate action to protect other businesses in the area and the downtown, which have lost revenue due to shoplifting, property damage, safety risk to employees, particularly at night and perceived safety risk to customers. There are 57 businesses within 300 metres of The Lighthouse, representing over 1,300 jobs, "a meaningful employment cluster and an important part of Orillia's municipal tax base, local job market and broader economic development ecosystem," reads the report. Since The Lighthouse opened in its new 75 Queen St. E. location in 2021, employers have raised concerns "about perceived safety, criminal activity affecting business operations, employee retention and satisfaction and the ability to maintain a welcoming environment for customers and staff." Similar concerns have been reported to the city from downtown businesses, especially those that operate at night. "Staff at the Orillia Opera House have significant safety concerns due to the increased presence of encampments surrounding the building, especially when shifts end between 9 and 11 p.m.," reads the report. Recurring incidents related to safety, security, theft, vandalism and other disruptive incidents have been reported and in some cases, on a daily basis. Reported criminal activity impacting businesses' day-to-day operations includes: * Theft of goods * Damage to property * Trespassing * Perceived safety concerns raised by customers * Safety concerns and complaints from employees * Employees being followed to their vehicles after hours * Fear of leaving the workplace during breaks due to perceived safety concerns, resulting in lower job satisfaction * Theft of goods from employee vehicles * Desire or interest in moving a business elsewhere in the city or relocating to another municipality. "The frequency of these concerns is contributing to increased challenges for local employers and their employees," reads the report. However, many of the businesses support the work being done by The Lighthouse and understand the broader societal issues, it stated. As an emergency response, Orillia will immediately request greater OPP patrols in the downtown and Lighthouse area, create a business working group, prompt the County of Simcoe for more housing and designate parking spaces for staff near the opera house. "The working group is tasked with a pretty tight timeline of November to come back with solutions on how we can better equip our future council with ready-to-go actions that can help support the employers and employees of that neighbouring area," said Ladouceur. Mayor Don McIsaac will contact the county with regard to Orillia-specific plans to address and mitigate encampments within Orillia and provide housing. The business support working group will be made up of three councillors, Janet-Lynne Durnford, Whitney Smith and Ralph Cipolla, a representative from The Lighthouse, three local business owners, a representative from the County of Simcoe and the OPP, a city staff member from the business development, tourism and modernization divisions and a staff member from the legislative service division. An approved amendment to the list also adds a nurse from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Dale Rowe, executive director of The Lighthouse, stated in a recent letter to Ladouceur that she will sit on and support the new business support working group. "The organization believes the working group would provide a valuable forum for open dialogue, information sharing, and coordinated problem-solving, helping to strengthen relationships among stakeholders and people experiencing homelessness while advancing solutions that promote community well-being, safety and economic stability," Rowe wrote. Coun. Ralph Cipolla, who owns C.C. Fashions on Mississaga Street, said he's familiar with these issues in the area as it affects downtown businesses. "Because of the issues in the area, business is down 30 to 40 per cent over the last year or year and a half," Cipolla said. Coun. Tim Lauer asked, "Why now? Why would we wait until two months before the end of the term before we react to this particular issue? "The downtown has been concerned about this for years. This is an issue that started to evolve eight years ago. We seem to be centring on just the life of this area. Why would this not be city-wide? "Why are we suddenly just concerned about this specific area? I know I've had complaints from people in the north end of people being found in gardens and things like that. Homelessness is affecting everybody and that's the problem. It's not The Lighthouse. If The Lighthouse wasn't in town, we'd have 50 more people on the street," he said. "The problem is homelessness, and it's a problem that has not been addressed by this provincial government, this federal government or anybody," Lauer said. Ladouceur said they focused on the area around The Lighthouse and the downtown because that's where a high volume of complaints have been coming from recently. "Obviously, once we found out that the news that 200 jobs and about $15 to $20 million of gross salary are leaving, it's something that necessitates actions," he said. eCapital operates across Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. and has more than 850 employees overall. There are only two office locations in Canada, in Toronto and Orillia. OrilliaMatters contacted eCapital for comment, but did not hear back before publication. eCapital delivers $10MM ABL facility to Florida flight training company.

eCapital delivers $10MM ABL facility to Florida flight training company. The financing provides critical working capital to support ongoing operations as the company executes a strategic turnaround plan and positions itself for future growth. eCapital, an AI-powered fintech company building the next generation of specialty finance, provided a $10 million asset-based lending revolving credit facility to a Florida-based flight training company undergoing an extensive operational and financial restructuring. The financing provides critical working capital to support ongoing operations as the company executes a strategic turnaround plan and positions itself for future growth. Brought in by the company's new CFO, eCapital worked closely with management to develop a customized working capital solution tailored to the complexities of the restructuring process, which included asset sales, cost reduction initiatives and broader operational changes. The facility features an enhanced advance rate on accounts receivable, includes a foreign receivables component without requiring credit insurance and allows an existing split cash flow term loan to remain in place. The flexible structure provides the liquidity needed to support day-to-day operations while enabling management to focus on executing its turnaround strategy. "The strongest restructuring outcomes occur when management has the flexibility to focus on execution rather than liquidity constraints," Mike Conrad, senior vice president, business development officer at eCapital, said. "Our role was to provide a financing solution that supports operational stability today while creating room for the business to pursue its longer-term objectives."
