About the company

Lyft runs a ride-hailing app that connects riders with nearby drivers in the United States and Canada, and its Freenow app books taxis and other rides across Europe. In 2019, it became the first ride-hailing company to go public in the United States, weeks ahead of Uber. Riders see the price before they book and pay through the app, and Lyft keeps a share of each fare while independent drivers, who use their own or rented cars, earn the rest. Lyft also runs bike-share systems such as New York's Citi Bike, sells ads inside its app, and dispatches self-driving cars from partner companies in some cities. Lyft was founded in 2012 and is based in San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Demand keeps growing: active riders rose 17% to a record 30.5 million in mid-2026, including European taxi app Freenow.
  • Finances are steadier: after costs and capital spending, Lyft generated a record $1.12 billion of cash in 2025.
  • Partners bring in riders: a record 30% of North American rides were tied to partners like United Airlines in mid-2026.

What critics are saying

  • Uber is five times bigger: it booked $29 billion of rides in the June 2026 quarter, versus Lyft's $5.5 billion.
  • Stock grants have shrunk: Lyft shares fell 17% in 2026 through October 8, versus 14% for Uber.
  • Labor fights still cost: in October 2026, Lyft settled California's suit over drivers' contractor status for a state-record $272.5 million.

What makes Lyft unique

  • Lyft is also a bike company: city systems using its bikes, docks and software log 180 million rides a year.
  • Lyft keeps robotaxis running: its Flexdrive fleet unit manages Waymo's Nashville cars and opens an 80,000-square-foot depot in October 2026.
  • US drivers get a guaranteed cut: Lyft promises them at least 70% of weekly rider fares, after outside fees.

Lyft launches quick phone return service, get your device back in hours.

Lyft launches quick phone return service, get your device back in hours. In an age where our smartphones have transformed into extensions of ourselves, the panic that ensues after leaving your phone behind in a rideshare vehicle is all too real. Lyft is rolling out an innovative feature to help users recover lost phones quickly and efficiently - a timely upgrade that small business owners will find particularly beneficial as it offers a lifeline for those who rely heavily on their devices for both personal and professional tasks. Lyft has introduced a return phone ride feature designed specifically to assist riders in retrieving phones they inadvertently leave behind. With this service, returning a lost phone typically takes just a couple of hours, drastically reducing recovery time that previously could stretch to several hours - even up to a day. This process is straightforward and user-friendly. Should you find your phone missing after exiting your Lyft ride, you can request a return ride from the Lyft Help center using another device, such as a friend's phone or a laptop. After entering your location and the desired time for the pick-up, your assigned driver will deliver your phone directly to you, eliminating any need for time-consuming back-and-forth communications. Discover more Business funding resources Small business courses Office product deals "Because everything happens in the Lyft Help center, there's no swapping phone numbers with your driver or going back and forth over meetup times," Lyft emphasizes. This streamlined approach is particularly appealing to business owners who prioritize efficiency in their operations. The statistics speak volumes: approximately 80% of riders receive their phones the same day they were lost, and nearly half are returned in less than two hours after the feature's launch. This is a marked improvement compared to the previous average recovery times. As many entrepreneurs and small business owners can attest, a day without access to mobile contacts, emails, and crucial business information can lead to lost opportunities and revenue. In addition to phones, Lyft is looking to expand this service to include other misplaced personal items, such as jackets, wallets, and laptops, by the end of winter 2026. This enhancement signals a commitment to developing a comprehensive support system for riders, which could serve as invaluable assistance for businesses where time is money. However, despite the evident advantages, small business owners should consider potential challenges associated with relying on this new feature. Firstly, while the service is free for Lyft Pink members, non-members will incur ride costs that vary based on distance, traffic, and demand at the time of the return. This variability might raise some cost concerns for businesses operating on tight budgets. Additionally, while the service suggests that drivers will operate efficiently to return lost items promptly, delays could occur due to logistical challenges such as traffic or driver availability. If a business relies heavily on instant access to an operational phone, this could create disruption. Discover more Business startup guide Small business ideas Buy a business Looking ahead, Lyft has teased plans for a lost item detection system. This would notify users if they forgot an item in a vehicle, potentially before they even realize it. Such advancements could further reduce the stress of lost items and strengthen Lyft's utility for small businesses. Overall, Lyft's new return phone ride feature is set to redefine how small business owners manage their mobility and connectivity, ensuring that they experience minimal disruption even when mishaps occur. In a world where losing a phone can feel like losing touch with reality, this initiative by Lyft showcases how technology can bridge gaps and enhance everyday experiences for both individuals and businesses alike. Lyft to rebrand TBR Global as Alcove in 2027, creating major Blacklane rival.

Lyft to rebrand TBR Global as Alcove in 2027, creating major Blacklane rival. By Mark Bursa | 19 October 2026, 22:05 Ride-hailing giant Lyft has announced plans to rebrand its recently acquired chauffeur operation TBR Global Chauffeuring as Alcove. Alcove will be US-based Lyft's dedicated brand for global chauffeuring services, and will compete directly with Blacklane, which was recently acquired by Lyft's main global rival, Uber. The name change will happen in early 2027, the company said in a statement. Alcove will combine TBR Global Chauffeuring's service expertise and global network with new technology to modernise global corporate ground transportation Lyft's statement said: "Alcove will combine high-touch service and a world-class passenger experience with greater visibility and control across global corporate travel programmes." Business customers will be able to access Alcove in early 2027 through a new portal and through current TBR channels, followed by a new mobile app later in the spring. In addition to current TBR Global Chauffeuring customers, Alcove will serve new corporate travel programs, bookers, and passengers around the world, which is expected to bring incremental gross bookings and strong margins to Lyft. Building on TBR's three decades of expertise, Alcove will support complex and high-profile trips, including VIP travel, events, and journeys involving multiple vehicles or extended bookings. Initially the new Alcove portal will be open to managed business account customers, with self-service access and a mobile app to follow later in the spring. Additionally, Alcove will continue to support customers through experienced service teams and other channels, including direct corporate and travel management company (TMC) relationships. Alcove marks another step in Lyft's expansion beyond on-demand rideshare, extending the company's reach into a global chauffeur market worth tens of billions of dollars. While Alcove will be a separate brand, Lyft Business customers will also be able to access its services. "Lyft is moving up and out, creating customer-obsessed products up and down the value chain and in more places around the world. Alcove supercharges that strategy," said Lyft CEO David Risher. "Great chauffeurs go above and beyond, and with Alcove, we are excited for more people to experience the highest levels of service. Like the bridge instead of the tunnel? Prefer 72 degrees? Want the rear window open just a bit? That's what Alcove will offer." Global Business Travel Association research highlights the challenges of managing global corporate travel programs: 61% of travel buyers say managing travel across regions is challenging, while only 12% have a consolidated view of their program from a single data source. Alcove aims to give program managers greater visibility and control, bookers confidence that trips can be reliably managed, and passengers a premium experience built around their needs. Alcove brings together TBR's established service network across six continents and Lyft's experience in executing one billion rides a year. Since Lyft acquired TBR, the business has grown rapidly, recording its best-ever quarter in Q2 2026. Posted in News

Blue Shield of California adds ex-lyft CFO to board.

Blue Shield of California adds ex-lyft CFO to board. Blue Shield of California has appointed Erin Brewer, former chief financial officer of Lyft, to its board of directors, the Oakland-based health plan said in an Oct. 15 announcement. Brewer brings more than two decades of experience in finance, strategy, operations and corporate governance across health care, technology and financial services. The appointment matters because nonprofit health plans are under pressure to control costs and premiums while investing in technology and member experience. Adding a seasoned public company finance executive to the Blue Shield of California board signals the plan's focus on financial discipline as it pursues its affordability goals. Brewer's background. Brewer joined Lyft as CFO in 2023, and the company said she helped lead a significant financial transformation, including Lyft's first full year of profitability. She oversaw global teams covering finance, investor relations, internal audit, corporate strategy and business development, according to Blue Shield. Before Lyft, she held leadership positions at Charles Schwab, the software company Atlassian and McKesson Corp., the health care services and pharmaceutical distribution company. She holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor's degree in accounting from Purdue University. Lyft announced Sept. 9 that Brewer would retire as CFO effective Sept. 28 and remain as an adviser through Dec. 15 to support the transition, according to the company's securities filing. Lyft named Michael Brous, a longtime executive, as her successor. Lyft said her departure did not result from any disagreement with the company. Lyft CEO David Risher praised Brewer's tenure when the transition was announced, calling her an extraordinary leader and partner since she joined in 2023. Brewer said at the time that Lyft was in a stronger position than ever and set up for continued growth and profitability, and described the CFO role as the highlight of her career. Her experience steering a public company through a turnaround to profitability is a key part of what she brings to Blue Shield, which faces its own pressure to balance growth, member costs and long-term financial health. What the Blue Shield of California board expects. "Erin brings a combination of financial discipline, operational leadership, and experience transforming complex organizations," said Pamela DeCoste, chair of Blue Shield of California's board. She said Brewer's perspective will strengthen the board as Blue Shield works to make high-quality health care sustainably affordable. The plan said Brewer's cross-industry experience will support efforts to modernize health care delivery, improve the consumer experience and advance long-term financial stewardship in service of its nonprofit mission. Brewer said Blue Shield's commitment to sustainable affordability resonated with her, and that she looks forward to working with the board and leadership team. About Blue Shield of California. Blue Shield of California is a taxpaying nonprofit and an independent member of the Blue Shield Association. It has nearly 6 million members, about 6,800 employees and more than $28 billion in annual revenue, according to the company. Founded in 1939 in San Francisco, it offers health, dental, vision, Medicaid and Medicare plans in California. The plan has positioned affordability as a central theme. In 2024 it launched Pharmacy Care Reimagined, an initiative that restructured how it manages prescription drug benefits, and it has highlighted efforts on prior authorization and health care affordability. It has also contributed more than $60 million to the Blue Shield of California Foundation over the past three years, the company said. A trend toward cross-industry board members. Health plans have increasingly recruited board members from technology and consumer companies as they invest in digital tools and member experience. Brewer's mix of health care distribution experience at McKesson and technology finance at Lyft and Atlassian fits that pattern. What comes next. Blue Shield did not say which board committees Brewer will join. Given her background, finance and audit oversight would be a natural fit. Her role on the Blue Shield of California board will be watched as the plan manages rising medical and pharmacy costs while trying to hold premiums down for members and employers.

Lyft launches Alcove business travel brand, building on $110M TBR chauffeur deal to rival Uber

Lyft is launching Alcove, a brand aimed at the business travel market. It will combine new corporate offerings with UK-based TBR Global Chauffeuring, which Lyft acquired last year for the equivalent of $110 million. Chief executive officer David Risher said Alcove will offer "the highest levels of service" with "great chauffeurs," including preferences such as route, temperature, and window position. The move follows Uber's March launch of Elite, a black-car service for executives and frequent travellers. Uber also bought Berlin-based chauffeur service Blacklane that month. Lyft said the global chauffeur market is worth "tens of billions of dollars." Alcove will first work directly with companies and travel management firms, with a portal and mobile app due next year.
