Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required, although appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.
  • Six years of relevant experience are required.
  • Coding certification such as Certified Professional Coder or Certified Coding Specialist–Physician-Based and/or a Health Information Management credential such as Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator is required.
  • The role requires expert knowledge of multispecialty medical coding, charge capture, reimbursement, contracting, payment processing, medical billing, collections, medical terminology, procedure codes, modifiers, diagnosis codes, coding requirements, and coding tools.
  • The role requires proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Current Procedural Terminology, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification coding, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services coding requirements.
  • The role requires the ability to interact effectively, take initiative, exercise independent judgment, and apply decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • The role requires strong written and oral communication skills.
  • The role requires the physical ability to occasionally lift moderate-weight materials and stand or walk continuously, as well as the ability to detect and translate speech or other communication.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as an expert resource for multispecialty documentation, coding, and billing.
  • Assist with medical coding audits of clinicians and coding staff to identify deficiencies and maintain compliance with coding guidelines and government and third-party payer regulations.
  • Assign or verify Current Procedural Terminology, International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification codes, and modifiers based on documentation across surgical, inpatient, emergency, and ambulatory coding as applicable.
  • Participate in workgroups to evaluate, produce, and update policies and procedures related to documentation, coding, billing, and internal processes.
  • Educate and train new and existing employees in multispecialty clinical areas, including government documentation and coding regulations.
  • Assist the lead and Coding Specialist IV team with educational sessions covering coding, charge capture processes, and Epic-related changes.
  • Onboard and educate new and existing physicians and advanced practice providers on documentation and coding rules and regulations.
  • Perform documentation and coding audits of clinicians and coding specialist staff for coding accuracy.
  • Support the Charge Capture Team by analyzing coding denial trends and troubleshooting solutions such as front-end system edits and front-end education to minimize reimbursement delays.
  • Train coworkers, coding staff, and clinicians as appropriate through evaluation, education, and orientation while adhering to coding and government documentation regulations.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Encoder Pro.
  • Participate in new employee orientation covering the charge capture process.
  • Maintain current knowledge of medical terminology, procedure codes, modifiers, diagnosis codes, coding requirements, and coding practices, and communicate changes to appropriate personnel.
  • Review payer policy publications, notices, and websites for coding and policy information to assist with appeal writing and other action determinations.
  • Prioritize and execute various projects on a day-to-day basis.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with front-end professional coding, Epic, and Encoder Pro is preferred.
