Entry-level data analysts focus on dashboards, reporting, and cleaning data using SQL, Excel, and BI tools like Tableau or Looker. Entry-level data scientists are expected to model data, write Python scripts, and sometimes deploy ML models. Many 'data scientist' jobs at small companies are actually analyst roles with a fancier title.
Don’t just say you know SQL, show it. Build and publish a public dashboard (e.g., using Streamlit or Tableau Public). Recreate a real business use case with open data. A GitHub repo or portfolio site with 2–3 clean, documented projects makes you instantly stand out from hundreds of resume-only applicants.
Parts of the role, like writing basic SQL queries or generating summary insights, can be accelerated by LLMs. But companies still need analysts to clean messy data, build usable dashboards, and interpret results in a business context. The skill that won’t be replaced: asking the right questions and knowing what matters to stakeholders.
Most analysts move into one of three tracks: 1) Senior analyst or analytics manager, 2) Data science or machine learning engineer (with additional Python/stats training), or 3) Product or business intelligence roles. After 2–3 years, you should either own a key business area or pivot toward technical or strategic specialization.
No. If you can write SQL, use Excel, and build dashboards, you’re hireable, especially if you can show business impact in a project. Many bootcamps teach tools but not applied thinking. Instead, take on a freelance project or redesign a company’s public data in a portfolio project. It’s cheaper and more impressive.
SQL is essential. Excel is still heavily used. Tableau, Power BI, and Looker are the top dashboard tools. Google Sheets + AppScript or BigQuery is increasingly common at startups. Python is nice to have, especially Pandas or Jupyter, not required, but useful for growth.
